Affordable Housing Project Complete In Mission

Mission is celebrating the grand opening of a 100-unit housing development on the Rosebud Reservation. The complex is the last part of a three phase project to provide the community with affordable housing. But there are still people waiting for a home of their own.

The completion of the $10.3 million third phase of the project is exciting for people in Mission.

“Well I think its a good thing that they built this because it was greatly needed,” says Colleen Larvie, a Sunrise resident.

When the Sunrise housing developments began accepting applications, management was flooded with paperwork from people looking for a new place to live.

“We were going through anywhere from 75 to 100 applications a week,” says Donna Peterson, Sunrise Manager.

There are more than 6,000 people on the waiting list to get into one of 168 units. Even though so many families are still without affordable housing, the project’s development company, Sioux Falls based Costello Realty and Property Management, says the new Sunrise homes do make a dent in the need.

“We’re going to be hiring a few more housekeepers, groundskeepers, maintenance workers and hopefully we’re going to try and talk them into letting us hire a laundry attendant,” says Peterson.

Those new jobs and affordable housing options are just part of the efforts to improve life on the Rosebud Reservation.
